Solutions by Need

Many organizations have more than one internet service provider (ISP). This is often by necessity because they live in an area of poor connectivity; or prudence - they want a fall-back plan should their main ISP go down.

Bandwidth Issues

  • Organizations often pay for the extra line, and never use it.
  • Failovers are manually performed, causing downtime in-between switch from one provider the the backup.
  • Extra bandwidth may be available to the company, and is not being utilized

Recommendation

Untangle provides bandwidth management applications that work closely together to help manage and optimize wide area connections (WANs), or multiple connections to the internet, all included in the Untangle Premium Package

The Untangle WAN Balancer allows organizations to easily split traffic across up to six different Internet connections. Internet traffic is then spread based on user-specified weightings, ensuring less contention and higher performance. Companies can also save money with WAN Balancer by eliminating an expensive T1 connection in favor of multiple and redundant Cable and DSL links.

The Untangle WAN Failover allows organizations to prevent network downtime caused by their ISP. The application detects if a company's primary Internet link goes down and switches traffic to a backup connection automatically. When used with WAN Balancer, WAN Failover detects downtime and reroutes traffic to the remaining Internet links. Once the primary link is back up, it switches back to normal, automatically, preventing downtime all the way.

These applications are included in the Untangle Premium Package.

Network managers want to ensure they have good visibility and control of who is doing what online.

User Access Issues

  • Lack of insight into who the "heavy users" are of internet bandwidth
  • Need to limit access to certain sites, services or at certain times of day
  • Need to provide audit trails of individual users' web browsing
  • Need to enable different internet access policies for different groups of users, e.g. students and staff
  • Requiring users to accept terms-of-use policy before accessing the internet
  • Ensuring existing login credentials for Active Directory or RADIUS servers are utilized.

Recommendation

Untangle provides several applications that work closely together to help manage user access to the internet, all included in the Untangle Standard Package

The Untangle Policy Manager is for administrators with complex networks where one size doesn't fit all. Many organizations need to provide unique privileges to different sets of users like schools (teachers vs. students), libraries (librarians vs. public Internet terminals) or businesses with different departmental requirements (engineering vs. sales.) Policy Manager even makes it possible to block access to common productivity-killing websites like Myspace or Facebook during working hours, but keep it available during lunch and after hours. Access policies such as web content restrictions, by user name, by group name, and by time, can be set up and reports generated accordingly.

Untangle Directory Connector also couples to identity management tools like Microsoft’s Active Directory, or RADIUS. By integrating with Active Directory, Untangle makes it easy for administrators to leverage the rights and privileges they’ve already established for users on their networks. Users also benefit because they don’t have to remember any additional passwords. Even management loves the integration because leveraging Directory Connector usernames in reporting makes it easier to understand who is doing what on the network.

With Untangle Captive Portal, users can be presented with login challenge page before they gain access to the internet. This provided a very compelling reason for them to accept a click-through terms-of-use policy, or other similar user management requirements.

All of these applications are included in the Untangle Standard Package.

Spam is the bane of small businesses’ existence. It can not only bring viruses onto your network, but it can take over your computers and send spam to other computers. And it impacts you in other ways. According to a recent study, the cost of spam messages to U.S. companies — in terms of productivity and the equipment, software and manpower to combat it — was upwards of $10 billion a year.

So the key is to stop spam before it stops you, using a modern spam filter solution.

Our powerful Spam Blocker protects you with top-notch spam scanning and blocking at the edge of your network—before it can do damage or slow you down. Using the latest technologies, Spam Blocker transparently scans for spam, marks messages and intercepts emails. It requires no alteration of your network’s mail configuration and is constantly updated to guard against any refinements in trickery or techniques that senders create to get around other solutions.

Recommendation

If reducing SPAM is your primary need, consider the Untangle Standard Package, which includes all our basic protection applications, plus Spam Blocker with Commtouch Spam Booster.

  • Block Viruses, Spyware, Spam, Phish, and Other Malware – Untangle scans all traffic including http and ftp for viruses, worms, spyware, phishing, and other threats to protect your network and the personal information of your users.
  • New spam outbreaks are identified as soon as they emerge and are recorded in the Commtouch Detection Center. On the Untangle Server, Commtouch Spam Booster then queries the Commtouch Detection Center and receives message classification in real-time. The result is instant protection from new outbreaks, in any language, far ahead of signatures or software updates

Preventing inappropriate viewing of web pages by employees, children, etc. is a mandate for many organizations, but these days simply surfing the web and stumbling across a compromised page can infect your computer with a wide range of malware. Untangle offers a comprehensive web content filtering solution that protects your organization against inappropriate access and unintentional infection by visiting rogue websites.

Web Filtering Issues

Without an adequate web content filtering solution and procedures for compliance, your organization is significantly vulnerable to lost productivity, high Internet bandwidth consumption, and infection:

  • Children seeing web content that is simply inappropriate for their age
  • People wasting time on social networking sites during work hours
  • Internet bandwidth being consumed by live TV- or video-streaming sites
  • Compromise of end-user computers simply by surfing web sites infected with viruses, spyware, and other malware

Web Content Compliance

Many organizations are compelled to provide web content filtering due to local or national legislation.

  • In the US, schools and public libraries are required to adhere to the Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA) in order to remain eligible for Federal funding.
  • Certain US states can hold employers liable for "creating a hostile environment" if an employee sees material on another's workspace that they find offensive.
  • A number of countries specifically require that internet access be filtered

Recommendation

If robust web content filtering is your primary need, consider the Untangle Standard package, which includes eSoft Web Filter.

  • Filter websites by critical categories for CIPA such as Pornography, Illegal Drugs, Dating, and Hate and Aggression, as well as manage access to web mail, shopping, proxies, and other sites
  • Control Internet usage based on 53 categories that covers over 100 million URLs.
  • URLs that have not been seen before are processed and classified in real-time, allowing you to stay one step ahead
  • Block https/ssl sessions by IP, thwarting a popular work around for standard web filtering solutions
  • Mandate SafeSearch usage across all major search engines, centrally.
Other features include:
  • Policy Management – Create web usage policies and rules based on user and/or time of day, e.g. for teachers, staff, and students of different age groups.
  • Monitoring - Untangle Reports lets you see who’s doing what on your network, including reporting by active directory user name. This lets you monitor for violations of your acceptable use policy and identify suspect behavior
  • Control Instant Messenger and other P2P applications – port hopping applications such as instant messenger and bit torrent can bypass standard firewall rules, consume network traffic, introduce malware, and open a door for predators.
  • Block Viruses, Spyware, Spam, Phish, and Other Malware – Untangle scans all traffic including http and ftp for viruses, worms, spyware, phishing, and other threats to protect your network and the personal information of your users.

A comprehensive security platform is a top priority for defense-in-depth and threat mitigation in order to protect your organization. Untangle offers a unified solution that combines firewall, intrusion detection & prevention, network security monitoring, and more at an attractive price.

Network Security Issues

Without an adequate network security program and procedures for compliance, your organization is significantly at risk from a myriad of attacks:

  • External hackers accessing your internal sensitive corporate data
  • Staff computers compromised by viruses and spyware that leak sensitive data
  • Public corporate services such as web and email servers being compromised
  • Forced downtime of your network from external Denial of Service attacks

Compliance Requirements

Many organizations are compelled to stringent levels of network security and control due to corporate, local government, or federal regulations.

  • All merchants large and small must be compliant at some level with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) regulations, including the installation and maintenance of a firewall to protect cardholder data.
  • PCI compliance also requires the use and routine update of anti-virus solutions and extensive network and application penetration tests.
  • Many other local, state, and federal regulations exist (e.g. the UK Data Protection Act of 1998) that require organizations to ensure their IT systems are providing adequate security and protection against data compromise.
  • Each organization often implements additional network security policies tailored to their own industry or profession. They require the ability to adapt to forever changing demands of securing the infrastructure.

Recommendation

If comprehensive network security and control is your primary need, consider the Untangle Premium Package, which includes Kasperksy Anti-Virus plus:

  • Robust firewall solution for protecting access to specific services such as web, email, and FTP servers
  • Network Address Translation (NAT) to best protect internal employee computers
  • Intrusion Detection and Prevention solution with automatic updates for mitigating the latest application-level threats
  • Block Viruses, Spyware, Spam, Phish, and Other Malware – Untangle scans all traffic including http and ftp for viruses, worms, spyware, phishing, and other threats to protect your network and the personal information of your users.
